The Source

Our thermal water supply was created millions of years ago. Calistoga sits above a fractured plate that causes magma to ooze upward and come in contact with subterranean waters at a depth of 4,000 feet. These waters become superheated and are forced through ancient sea beds until they reach the earth’s surface, escaping at 230 degrees Fahrenheit.

Geothermically heated waters have been used for thousands of years, and maybe longer. There was a revival of heated bathing culture back in the mid-to-late 19th century that saw the creation of countless “healing water” baths and spas all advertising various spa therapies to cure numerous health related issues.

Most Victorian spas claimed the natural minerals in the hot steamy geothermal water would leave you with a refreshed and energized feeling that you won’t get at any other regular spa. These hot geothermal waters, baths, pools and spas regularly exposed bathers to water temperatures well in excess of 100 degrees F.

We’re proud of the aesthetic details in our custom-built sauna & steam room:
Dry sauna constructed of European Ledgestone accent wall behind the equipment to walls made of aspen wood to promote healing, benches out of basswood for softness with alternating dark alder wood.  Form fitting benches allow guests to feel more cradled than traditional upright stadium seating.  Every piece of wood in the sauna was hand-planed, sanded and planed again to achieve an ultra smooth finish. Walls were triple sealed to help retain heat to ensure a constant temperature.

Steam Room features a ceramic mosaic penny tile with a motif of water falling from the ceiling. Tiles were hand cut piece by piece to produce the shape. The equipment for the steam room was designed to allow for continuous operation from beginning of the day to the end. Guests do not have to adjust any settings. Essential oils will be automatically dispersed within the steam to enhance the experience.  The highest standard equipment was installed to help filter out particulates in the water to ensure a very pure steam,  combined with a highly energy efficient building envelope meaning we could use smaller, more efficient machines.
