Petrified Forest

A California Registered Historic Landmark, the Petrified Forest in Calistoga is a step back in time to 3 million years ago. Scientists believe that the grove of giant redwoods and other species of trees was petrified as a result of Mt. St. Helena erupting. Volcanic ash buried the trees and later crystallized into stone. Along the Petrified Forest Trail are The Giant, a 60-foot long tree with a 6-foot diameter; The Monarch or Tunnel Tree, 105 feet of trunk of which is exposed; and the Petrified Wood Pile. The Petrified Forest is open daily. Guided naturalist tours are available.
